Why this page exists.
Section 5 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 requires Big Helpers to give you a notice before or when it asks for your consent. The notice must say what personal data is involved, why, how you exercise your rights and how you complain to the Data Protection Board of India. The screen below, this page and the full privacy notice together are that notice.
1. Where you see it
The consent screen appears once, as the consent step when you create a Copio account, on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web, after your email is verified and before any device is registered or sync can start. You can read it again at any time under Settings, then Privacy and legal, then DPDP notice, which opens this page.
2. The text shown in the app
This is the wording of the screen, reproduced without change.
Your data, plainly stated.
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, here is exactly what Copio processes and why. Big Helpers is the data fiduciary.
Clip content. Stored only as ciphertext encrypted on your devices. We cannot read it.
Account data. Name, email, mobile number, username, photo and device names, used for sign-in, sync, recovery and billing.
Your rights. Access, correction, erasure, nomination and grievance redressal from Settings, or write to the Grievance Officer at admin@bighelpers.in.
Checkbox, unticked: I consent to this processing. I can withdraw consent at any time from Settings, under Privacy.
Below the box: Read the full consent notice and the privacy policy. Withdrawing consent stops sync; your clips stay on your devices.
Button: Agree and continue
3. What agreeing does
- It gives consent under section 6 of the Act for cross-device sync: encrypted clips and the metadata listed in section 3 of the privacy notice are sent to the Copio server so your other devices can receive them. Nothing is sent before you agree.
- Copio records that consent with the time, the device it came from and the IP address, as evidence that the notice was given and consent was taken (section 6(10) of the Act allows the Data Fiduciary to be asked to prove this).
- Adding a mobile number later, during sign-up or in Settings, is a further separate consent for phone verification through the SMS provider.
Creating and securing the account itself, verifying your email, registering devices, pairing, billing a plan you buy and answering your requests do not need this consent: they process data you volunteered for that purpose under section 7(a) of the Act. The privacy notice, section 4, sets this out.
4. What you are not agreeing to
Nothing on the consent screen lets Big Helpers read your clips, because the server never receives the vault key. You are not agreeing to advertising, profiling, the sale of personal data or the use of clipboard content to train AI models. Copio does none of those things, with or without consent.
5. Withdrawing consent
Section 6(4) of the Act says withdrawing consent must be as easy as giving it. In Copio on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, open Settings, then Privacy, and switch sync off: the device stops sending clips at once. On the web app there is no sync switch yet; withdraw by removing this browser or any other device under Settings, then Devices (a removed device sends nothing and its copy of the vault key is cleared), by erasing the server copy under Settings, then Delete my account, or by writing to the Grievance Officer from Settings, then Privacy and legal, then Raise a grievance, with the subject "Withdraw sync consent", which we action within 2 working days. Remove your mobile number in Profile to withdraw phone verification. Withdrawal stops future processing; it does not make earlier processing unlawful (section 6(5)).
6. Your consent record
Copio records each consent you give or withdraw with the date and the device it came from. In Copio on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android the record is shown under Settings, then Privacy. The web app does not display it yet: ask for it from Settings, then Privacy and legal, then Raise a grievance, or from the Grievance Officer below, and we send it within 2 working days.
7. Rights and grievances
Your rights of access, correction, erasure, nomination and grievance redressal are described in section 11 of the privacy notice. Each is a control in the app, and each can be raised with the Grievance Officer:
Grievance Officer, Big Helpers
shrawan@bighelpers.in
Every grievance is acknowledged within 2 working days and resolved within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, or receive no response in that time, you may approach the Data Protection Board of India under section 13(3) of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Never send your password, recovery key, backup passphrase, device PIN, access token or clipboard content by email. We will never ask for them.
8. Language
Section 5(3) of the Act lets you read this notice in English or in any language listed in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. The Hindi version is at copioapp.com/consent-notice-hi.html. If the two versions differ, the English version governs.
